Dwarf pomegranate "Carthage" - Punica granatum nana.
Pomegranate is a deciduous subtropical shrub. The plant is unpretentious, up to 60-100 cm high, with small emerald elliptical leaves.
It blooms from May to August with red flowers up to 2,5-4 cm in diameter. Fruits up to 5-7 cm in diameter have numerous seeds surrounded by a juicy shell. The juice is pleasant, sweet and sour.
Prefers direct sun on windows with southern, southwestern and western exposure (in summer, shading is desirable), spraying, regular watering with water at room temperature. With excessive watering, the fruits may crack. After spring frosts, the plant can be taken out into the garden in partial shade until autumn.
In winter, the pomegranate sheds its leaves. In this state, it is watered very rarely and kept at a temperature of +5+10 °C. The soil mixture should be loose and nutritious (1 part turf, 0.5 part humus, 1 part leaf soil, 1 part sand). In spring, from the beginning of shoot growth until July, the plant is fed weekly with flower fertilizer. At the end of the dormant period, the pomegranate is transplanted into a larger container every 2 years.
It is quite easy to propagate by seeds at normal room temperature. They are sown to a depth of 0,5 cm. At a temperature of +25 °C, shoots appear in 2-6 weeks. Young seedlings are repeatedly pinched for better branching. In early summer, sanitary pruning is done, removing weak and inwardly directed branches. It can be given any crown shape, including bonsai.
Pomegranate has medicinal properties: tonic, antidiarrheal, antipyretic, etc.
